E-Learning

I found that learning online as opposed to in a business school classroom had two distinct advantages. For one, I could customize the UNC Business Essentials program based on my own needs and interests. In a classroom, you learn the course material at the pace that your professor has preset. The pace is strategically set, but does not take into account that each student starts with varying degrees of knowledge on each topic.  With the certificate program, on the other hand, I was free to customize the course based on my own needs and interests. For instance, I was free to breeze through topics that I was already familiar with, such as economics, and take longer on others that were Read More

The Benefits of the Online Education Model of UNC Business Essentials Program

Have you ever taken a class at UNC where it seemed like the Professor might have been a world-record holder for most words spoken per minute?  I know that I’ve had multiple classes where the Professor lectured at such a rapid pace, it was physically impossible to get down every important detail and concept that was being covered.  It can be a pretty demoralizing feeling to walk out of a lecture with a hand-cramp from writing so quickly, and still knowing that you missed key parts of the lecture. If you can identify with this frustration, I would like to contrast it with the online, module-based curriculum of the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business Essentials Program.  I completed the program this past Read More

Business Skills At Your Own Pace

While being in a business school classroom would have provided some benefits, I honestly feel that I would not have learned as much as I did through UNC Business Essentials online modules.  UNC Business Essentials allowed me to move at my own pace, which actually allowed me to absorb more information.  The course gave me the opportunity to move slowly through the course, rather than playing catch up which typically occurs in most of my in person courses.  Also, I think if I had been in a business school classroom, I would have been intimidated by my peers due to my lack of knowledge about business courses.  Through UNC Business Essentials, I gained a multitude of knowledge in various subjects.  Read More

You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know

One thing that I took away from UBE is that unless you try new things, you will never know what you don’t know. Let me explain. Throughout each module of the certificate courses, I consistently discovered new aspects of the business realm that I did not even know existed. It’s one thing to know that you lack knowledge on a certain subject matter, say, quantum astrophysics, and another to not even know that there is a knowledge gap to be filled. For instance, although I was familiar with the economics content in the Economics and Finance module, I knew nothing about the Six Sigma process, the bullwhip effect, GAAP, or the 5 bases for segmentation in the other modules. Aspiring CEO

The most valuable skill I learned with the UNC Business Essentials program was to be versatile.  With the program you go through 6 different modules (Intro to Business, Financial Accounting, Economics & Finance, Marketing, Business Operations, and Business Communications) and that alone can prepare you for initial post-graduation jobs.  For me, it has given me an overview in various different backgrounds because in today’s job market you have to be prepared to possibly work your way up the ladder, especially in the job market I am seeking to dive into, Marketing/Advertising.  While the program had a Marketing section, thanks to this AWESOME program, I am ready to tackle any department my potential employers put me in as a new hire. On the Road with UBE

I gained an incredible amount of knowledge about the essentials of business – such as accounting and operations – over the course of just a few months, thanks to UBE’s certificate program. However, my favorite aspect of the program is undoubtedly its flexibility. This past summer was a very busy one for me; I was not only completing the program, but also working a 9-hours-a-day internship and traveling with my family. For these reasons, I was more than a little nervous that I would not be able to find enough time to devote to studying and moving through the modules. UBE is designed to ensure success, though, and the ability to download the program to my computer and work through Read More

Job Offer After Job Offer

As a senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I am very fortunate to be able to say that I have already accepted a job offer and that, upon graduation, I will be leaving North Carolina to begin a career in technical device sales. However, most people have a hard time understanding how it is that I am beginning a career in sales when my major is biology.   In fact, several (read: almost all) of the companies I interviewed with questioned my choice as well.  Nonetheless, upon brief explanation of my certificate in business from UNC Business Essentials, each of my doubters nodded in comprehension.  I would even go so far as to say that they were downright impressed Read More

$3,200 or $45,000-$90,000?

Would you rather invest $3,200 and know that business is the field for you, or would you rather waste $45,000-$90,000 finding out that business is NOT the field for you? As a second semester senior, who has changed her major several times throughout her undergraduate career, I understand the frustration that is felt both by the student and the parents when it comes to changing majors or changing career paths. For many students changing majors not only equals time lost to classes that now do not count towards your new major, but changing majors also means taking time away from the extra classes you could have taken because you were genuinely interested in the topic. For many parents, the thought Read More

Gaining the Edge as a Humanities Major

I took the UBE course over the summer and the best thing about it was how well it fit my schedule. I had an internship that took up most of my day week-in and week-out, but UBE was something I could sit down and do without stress, and everything was so interesting! Going through all the materials wasn’t something I stressed over, and by the end of the course, I was much more prepared to start applying for jobs. Sending in applications to businesses was a lot easier with some sort of business knowledge on my resume. All of the employers that I interviewed with were impressed by how proactive I was in seeking out a program to round off Read More

From “Finance” in France to “Segmentation” in Santorini

What surprised me most about the UBE program was the extensiveness of the accessibility of the program.  The program itself can be completed either online or off.  To work offline, there is a program that you can download onto your computer at anytime during the coursework (the only current flaw being that the software will only work on Microsoft computers for now).  They also already have PDF printouts optimized and available for pen-to-paper note-taking during the PowerPoint lectures in each Module, as well as PDF printouts of the Unit Summaries and Glossary of Terms within each of the 6 Modules, all of which I found very helpful “on-the-go.” I don’t know who all has completed UBE or where they were Read More
