A Job on the Horizon

As an exercise and sport science major with a concentration in sport administration, the Business Essentials program complements my undergraduate degree perfectly. Graduating from the program and being able to put the UNC Kenan Flagler name on my resume has already helped me secure a summer internship. For a non-business major, graduating from this program will help to separate you from the pack when working to secure a business related job. The combination of skills UBE teaches students will be attractive to any potential employer, regardless of the field of work. Knowing the foundation of such skills as accounting or marketing gives you an incredible advantage over those who may have little to no experience with these things. As a Read More

On the Road with UBE

I gained an incredible amount of knowledge about the essentials of business – such as accounting and operations – over the course of just a few months, thanks to UBE’s certificate program. However, my favorite aspect of the program is undoubtedly its flexibility. This past summer was a very busy one for me; I was not only completing the program, but also working a 9-hours-a-day internship and traveling with my family. For these reasons, I was more than a little nervous that I would not be able to find enough time to devote to studying and moving through the modules. UBE is designed to ensure success, though, and the ability to download the program to my computer and work through Read More

Breaking into Consulting

As a junior seeking an internship for this upcoming summer, my first fear was that I had no real, tangible business experience. At meet-and-greets with consulting firms, I quickly realized that I was up against a plethora of undergraduates at UNC Kenan-Flagler, and I was concerned that I lacked the business courses that would give me an edge.   When I finally sat down to read about consulting internships over winter break, I realized that my skills from UNC Business Essentials were finally going to be put to practical use. Profit margins, barriers to entry, and strategic operations didn’t seem so daunting when I started looking over my notes from the UBE online modules.  I recognize now that without the Business Read More

Using Financial Accounting

The concepts taught throughout the UNC Business Essentials modules have the instant real world applicability that I rarely find in my history courses. While my undergraduate degree is improving my reading comprehension and critical thinking abilities, the details are less important. For example, knowing the specifics of the liberation wars in Southern Africa probably won’t be extremely instrumental in life outside of class. On the other hand, I can instantly apply concepts from the financial accounting module of the Business Essentials course when following recent news developments. Many of the concepts discussed in the financial accounting module have made it easier to follow discussions on the state of the economy and the viability of certain companies. I can now more Read More
