One thing that I took away from UBE is that unless you try new things, you will never know what you don’t know. Let me explain. Throughout each module of the certificate courses, I consistently discovered new aspects of the business realm that I did not even know existed. It’s one thing to know that you lack knowledge on a certain subject matter, say, quantum astrophysics, and another to not even know that there is a knowledge gap to be filled. For instance, although I was familiar with the economics content in the Economics and Finance module, I knew nothing about the Six Sigma process, the bullwhip effect, GAAP, or the 5 bases for segmentation in the other modules. Navigating the Business World
As both a Biology and Comparative Literature major, I understand the value a business background adds to a science degree and to a humanities degree. I consider myself a well-rounded person, but one thing I’ve always been interested in was business but could never take any courses. UNC Business Essentials is truly business for the non-business major and adds to my resume greatly. Now that I’m a graduating senior, I feel so much more confident that not only can I add the UNC Kenan-Flagler name to my list of accomplishments, but I truly have the business background to navigate a business-related career whether it be related to accounting, marketing, or economics. And no matter what field I find myself in, Read More
Adding Kenan-Flagler to the List
My favorite aspect of UBE was that it is self-paced and thus perfectly tailored to the lives of busy, involved UNC students. I completed the UBE program this past summer while working a 40-hour-plus a week internship coordinating a summer program through a local non-profit. Although I was busy every weekday and travelling on many weekends, the flexibility of the UNC UBE program enabled me to pace myself in a unique way tailored to my schedule. Had it been a normal scheduled class, I would not have been able to complete it. With it being on the computer, it is accessible anywhere your computer/internet are. The UBE program is very unique in this aspect. To be able to learn the Read More
A Glimpse into the World that I Thought I Was Too Far Behind to Enter
When I first heard about the UNC Business Essentials Program, I automatically thought, “this might be my way in: A way for me to test and see if the business world is ideally for me.” Entering UNC as a first generation college student, I did not have any guidance as to what I should do or have any idea as to who I wanted to become or what I should major. It was not until the spring of my junior year when I realize that business could be the major for me. With business and corporations came words such as marketing, finance, accounting and much more. By the time I had come to this realization, I felt as though it Read More
An Appropriate Foundation for the Future
I went into UNC Business Essentials honestly not knowing what to expect. With a background in public relations and advertising I truly did not know what business basics there even were to learn. And to tell you the truth, I was skeptical. I expected to read textbook information that would give me minimal insight into the corporate track for post-graduation. However, I was surprised when I found the information I was learning was actually engaging and relevant. While going through the modules I learned material and concepts that I could now use in business conversations, which helps me feel confident in job interviews with future potential employers. I felt like I was given the inside scoop on the corporate world, Read More
