A young college student has a number of different options when choosing a potential major to focus their studies on for four years. Although there is no wrong choice per say, there are undoubtedly some majors that are more practical than others. It seems as though after making that decision on a major, you are locked into a particular skill set, and if you happen to choose something incompatible with the job world, you are out of luck. This is where UNC Business Essentials comes into play, breaking that mold. Business Essentials provided me with concrete ways to tangibly add to my skill set and make me a more marketable job applicant. Many students who have not had formal business Read More

Navigating the Business World
As both a Biology and Comparative Literature major, I understand the value a business background adds to a science degree and to a humanities degree. I consider myself a well-rounded person, but one thing I’ve always been interested in was business but could never take any courses. UNC Business Essentials is truly business for the non-business major and adds to my resume greatly. Now that I’m a graduating senior, I feel so much more confident that not only can I add the UNC Kenan-Flagler name to my list of accomplishments, but I truly have the business background to navigate a business-related career whether it be related to accounting, marketing, or economics. And no matter what field I find myself in, Read More
A Job on the Horizon
As an exercise and sport science major with a concentration in sport administration, the Business Essentials program complements my undergraduate degree perfectly. Graduating from the program and being able to put the UNC Kenan Flagler name on my resume has already helped me secure a summer internship. For a non-business major, graduating from this program will help to separate you from the pack when working to secure a business related job. The combination of skills UBE teaches students will be attractive to any potential employer, regardless of the field of work. Knowing the foundation of such skills as accounting or marketing gives you an incredible advantage over those who may have little to no experience with these things. As a Read More
Aspiring CEO
The most valuable skill I learned with the UNC Business Essentials program was to be versatile. With the program you go through 6 different modules (Intro to Business, Financial Accounting, Economics & Finance, Marketing, Business Operations, and Business Communications) and that alone can prepare you for initial post-graduation jobs. For me, it has given me an overview in various different backgrounds because in today’s job market you have to be prepared to possibly work your way up the ladder, especially in the job market I am seeking to dive into, Marketing/Advertising. While the program had a Marketing section, thanks to this AWESOME program, I am ready to tackle any department my potential employers put me in as a new hire. Read More
UBE in Italy! Getting Noticed All Over the World
My freshman year at Carolina, I was deciding between studying economics and business. I ultimately decided on economics, as I have always been really interested in the intersection between politics and economics, especially on the international level. While I am happy with my decision, I always wanted to take a business class, as knowing basic business skills is important in any profession; however, with a double major and minor, I could never find the time in my class schedule. When I heard about UNC Business Essentials, I was really excited. It provided the perfect overview of business skills and allowed me to take the courses wherever and whenever I wanted to. This was great, as I was working and taking Read More
$3,200 or $45,000-$90,000?
Would you rather invest $3,200 and know that business is the field for you, or would you rather waste $45,000-$90,000 finding out that business is NOT the field for you? As a second semester senior, who has changed her major several times throughout her undergraduate career, I understand the frustration that is felt both by the student and the parents when it comes to changing majors or changing career paths. For many students changing majors not only equals time lost to classes that now do not count towards your new major, but changing majors also means taking time away from the extra classes you could have taken because you were genuinely interested in the topic. For many parents, the thought Read More
More Than the Basics
A couple months ago, I sat down at Starbucks with my laptop and a tall Passion Fruit Iced Tea Lemonade in hand, ready to knock out the first module of the UBE Business Essentials program. At the time, I thought the program would be a general overview of basic business concepts, something to get my feet wet in business terminology and principles. I found out pretty quickly that the UBE program was going to be a little more involved and in-depth than I had planned. The first module contained all of the information that I thought the whole program would contain – an overview of the business industry, including some common terms and principles. After that, the rest of the Read More
