Flexibility that Allowed Me to Learn More

In my first years at Carolina, I was very science-oriented. Most of my classes consisted of science courses, and I could usually be found in the dark, dungeon-like laboratories of Kenan two days out of the week. I had never really thought about the business world until my friends began participating in business cases and competitions through the Kenan-Flagler Business School. It was then that I realized I did not have any business acumen and soon became intrigued by the field. I knew it was imperative that I learn the business essentials in order to further my education and be competitive in the workforce in whatever career path I choose. One of the most attractive aspects of UNC Business Essentials Read More

Practical: The Format, The Concepts

When I began the UNC Business Essentials program, I hoped the online format could introduce me to the business world I knew nothing about. I wanted the flexibility of an online business certificate because I knew I wouldn’t have an opportunity to learn business concepts as an undergraduate student with a liberal arts major. Yet, I was skeptical that I could learn something so unfamiliar to me without the stability and routine of a traditional classroom setting. Slightly intimidated by the program’s six modules, I quickly discovered the practicality of everything the UNC Business Essentials program has to offer. To my surprise, the online classes provided an incredibly practical format for learning the basics of business. Many lessons were taught Read More

Skills That I Will Use

After studying biology, chemistry, and radiologic science over the last several years, I knew almost nothing about business. During my time at Carolina, my career goals changed many times but I always knew I wanted to help people and make a difference in healthcare somehow. As I moved away from the idea of working for a hospital, I became interested in getting involved in non-profit organizations. Not only did I want to set myself apart from other recent graduates in the science field, I wanted to diversify my education and get a leg up in the business world. The UNC Business Essentials program was exactly what I was looking for. Being a program specially designed for non-business majors, I assumed Read More

A Worthwhile Summer

Summers used to be all about boating, basking in the sun, and barbecuing. And then college hit and it was all about the internship and building your resume. My passion is to work in university recruitment, which opens up an enormous range of universities and potential internships to gain experience in the field. This past summer, I wanted to gain more experience in a relevant position while grounding my experience in a firm academic base. The flexibility and rigor of the UNC Business Essentials program allowed me to do just that. I worked in a Marketing and Communications Internship at the University of Idaho. Through the internship, I gave residential and campus tours for prospective students (between 2-5 daily, with up to Read More

Flexibility That Fits Any Life Style

As a junior in the middle of my undergraduate college career, like most students at UNC, I have an overload of school work and extracurricular activities on my plate constantly. Time is my most valued necessity. UNC Business Essentials was the perfect fit for me, as a non-business major wanting to gain exposure and knowledge in the business field. One of the most appealing aspects of this program was the flexibility it offered students. Not only was I able to complete the program within four months on my own time, but I was also able to finish the program while maintaining a part time job at a law firm over the summer months. Since I did have a large obligation Read More

UBE – Overseas and At Home

I felt extremely accomplished after submitting my final quiz of the Business Essentials program. I have been on a journey with this program for the last few months. I started the program in late May while I was studying abroad in Sydney, Australia. My classes at the University of Sydney were not too involved at the time that I started Business Essentials. I set aside an hour or so every couple of days to work on the program. After completing the first section, exam week for my university’s classes was nearing. I took a break from Business Essentials while I took my exams and spent the next few weeks traveling some of the east coast of Australia. After returning to Read More

Confidence and Comprehension

This summer at my internship, I was chatting with a manager about a few of the inner workings of our company. Throughout the conversation, the phrase “accounts receivable” was tossed around. I nodded my head and pretended to know to what my manager was referring. Luckily for me, the UBE course’s unit on this topic was next on my list. Before taking this online course offered by the business school, I was completely unaware of several basic business concepts. As a history and political science major, I was unequipped this summer at my internship when discussing the responsibilities and strategies of business, especially when those responsibilities and strategies were accompanied with business-specific jargon. UBE’s online business certificate program helped me Read More

Never too Busy for these Business Basics

Have a full plate? Welcome to the life of the average college student! In three months, I packed in two mini-vacations, a five-day Indian wedding celebration, a summer study abroad program in France (can you say parlez-vous anglais, because that’s about all I can!), studied for and sat the Medical College Admission Test, and completed the online Business Essentials Certificate program through UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School. Frequently, conversations with my peers revolve around how busy we all are. The trademark of a student is to chase every opportunity surrounding our interests in an effort to gain the tools and experiences needed to succeed after graduation. A very important foundation that could benefit a student going into almost any field is Read More

Business Benefits for a Bio Major

If you have spent any time as a student at UNC-Chapel Hill (or as a college student in general), you know that balancing extra-curriculars, a job, and classes for your major can be quite a handful. I’ve experienced this myself first-hand – over the past three years, I have been performing a constant juggling act, trying to maintain high grades while doing community service and exploring club activities, all in the effort to become a well-rounded and marketable employee after graduation. One of the greatest things about UNC is that there is truly something for everyone here, no matter your interests. There are also many ways to use varied skill sets in an interdisciplinary fashion in order to accomplish different Read More

Flexibility and Feedback – Great Assets

I completed the UNC Business Essentials online business certificate program this summer while working a full-time internship. The program is designed so that each participant can work on the course modules at their own pace, without having to abide by any strict guidelines. For me personally, this was the program’s greatest asset. I was able to work all day at the office, and then come home at night to complete sections of the course. Being able to move at my own speed gave me the opportunity to work in my free time, and even some weekends when I didn’t have much to do. Each lesson activity, quiz, written assignment, and exam could be completed at any time and in any Read More
