I am Lucy Barber, a senior English major/Creative Writing minor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I am from Marietta, GA, although I’m most definitely a Tar Heel at heart. After I graduate and gain some work experience, I would like to open my own business as well as find funding to start a charter school. I want to work toward improving the education system in the United States on a large scale. Working with high school, middle school, and elementary school students in the Chapel Hill area has helped me realize this dream and encouraged me to pursue education reform. Basic business knowledge, as gained through the UNC Business Essentials program (UBE), is important to me in order to pursue all of these life goals. I have several business ideas and the program has helped me figure out how to start a business and implement these ideas. The UBE program has formed a foundational interest in business for me. I didn’t even know before I began the program that I was interested in entrepreneurial endeavors, but what I’ve gained is that realization. It has given me the skills and resources to pursue some of the goals that my English major would not have equipped me for.
