One thing I’ve realized as I talk to people about the UNC Business Essentials program is that a lot of students and adults considering this program already know why it is important to understand business despite their particular career path. They know having even a small background in business will not only help them secure a job, but also do well in that position. What they really want to know from me is does the UNC Business Essentials program “really work” and “is it worth it?” I think the answer to this question is, in my opinion, this program is what you make it. So often in today’s society we are used to getting a lot of results for minimized Read More

What Having a Certificate from Kenan-Flagler Means to Me, “The Actor”
So I didn’t go to business school. That’s right. I decided to go to UNC Chapel Hill and study theater, acting, or “Dramatic Art” as my degree will say. That’s what I’m doing now because that’s 1.) what I’m passionate about, 2.) what I excel in doing (and have been doing for 10 years, both academically and professionally), and 3.) there’s nothing that excites me and drives my actions in life more than the pursuit of acting as my career. But wait? “You’re an acting major…so don’t Read More
Searching for Internships with UBE
As a junior, I knew at the beginning of the year that I wanted to pursue a challenging internship in a professional environment this upcoming summer. Last summer, at nonprofit called International Development Enterprises in Cambodia, I worked closely with a number of independent consultants. I was fascinated by the work that consultants did and the fast-paced and exciting nature of their work and research, so I decided to pursue a consulting internship this summer. When I started dropping resumes for consulting internships, I literally had no idea what to expect. I quickly realized how challenging the case interview process was and, being a non-business major, was worried I would be extremely unprepared. Although casing took a while to get Read More
E-Learning
I found that learning online as opposed to in a business school classroom had two distinct advantages. For one, I could customize the UNC Business Essentials program based on my own needs and interests. In a classroom, you learn the course material at the pace that your professor has preset. The pace is strategically set, but does not take into account that each student starts with varying degrees of knowledge on each topic. With the certificate program, on the other hand, I was free to customize the course based on my own needs and interests. For instance, I was free to breeze through topics that I was already familiar with, such as economics, and take longer on others that were Read More
The Perks of an Online Program
Last summer, when I was doing the UNC Business Essentials Program, it was a super busy time in my life. It was the summer before my senior year at UNC and I was busy preparing applications for graduate school, working two jobs and volunteering. The online format of UNC Business Essentials was perfect for my busy schedule. I was able to work on the modules in at night and during my off time between activities. There would have been no way I could have participated in a program with set class times and exam schedules; it just wouldn’t have been possible with all that I had going on. It was much easier to find time in my schedule to dedicate Read More
