Piece of Cake, Right?

I’ve never really been a good test taker.  There always so much pressure to work super quickly with no time to second guess yourself.  On top of all that, my mind has a tendency to wander during this critical time when the most important thing is to be focused.  I’ve always felt that if I had as much time as I wanted, I could get a 100% on every test I took. So, as I read through the syllabus for the UNC Business Essentials courses, I chuckled to myself thinking that tests for an online course that gave you unlimited time would be a piece of cake.  This sentiment was further reinforced as I made my way through the first Read More

Things I Wish I Knew

Before starting the UNC Business Essentials program, I really did not know what to expect. I figured I would be introduced to basic business concepts, but I did not know too much more about the program. After completing the course, I was surprised at the variety of information presented. The six modules contain a lot of information, which initially seemed a bit overwhelming. I now know how important it is to really take the time to understand each of the modules and use the online tutors to your advantage. After completing the program, I also realize how important it is to have good note taking skills. Printing out the lesson guides and taking thorough notes really allows one to learn Read More

More Than the Basics

A couple months ago, I sat down at Starbucks with my laptop and a tall Passion Fruit Iced Tea Lemonade in hand, ready to knock out the first module of the UBE Business Essentials program. At the time, I thought the program would be a general overview of basic business concepts, something to get my feet wet in business terminology and principles. I found out pretty quickly that the UBE program was going to be a little more involved and in-depth than I had planned. The first module contained all of the information that I thought the whole program would contain – an overview of the business industry, including some common terms and principles. After that, the rest of the Read More

Surprise Factor

The aspect of UNC Business Essentials that surprised me the most was the Business Communication module.   I honestly had expected the program to focus on academic skill sets that would benefit me in my career, however I was pleasantly surprised to note that this module provided me with skills that are vital to any career when entering the job market.  This module taught me how to master communication through a variety of mediums such as email and conference calls.  One feature of the program that I wish I could change was the fact that GoCourse Player does not work with Macs. While I had known that the program for completing UNC Business Essentials was not compatible with Macs, it proved Read More

Business Is an Art and a Science

Just like any other suburban resident, I interact with businesses on a daily basis—I order my lunch from Alpine Bagel, I go to the Apple Store to figure out what’s wrong with my laptop, I do an unhealthy amount of shopping online, and I even work for one. With so much prior “exposure” to business, I figured I wouldn’t be too surprised by a formal education in the field. I was wrong. Throughout the UNC Business Essentials Program, I learned that there are so many more dimensions to the realm of business than the ones I step into everyday as a suburban resident. Even more, at the time I was taking the UBE courses I was simultaneously working as a Read More
