Translating UBE to Everyday Life

I was terrified of “financial accounting” when I began the UNC Business Essentials program.  The math-related components of business were what deterred me from pursuing business as a major, and so I approached that module of the program with much trepidation.  However, the curriculum explained the concepts in such a matter-of-fact voice that I had no trouble understanding the arithmetic involved (and it was very basic arithmetic at that).  Furthermore, I found those lessons in particular led me to feel more prepared for a basic level of business competency.  Understanding the inputs and outputs of a system is relevant to just about any career in life, and the way the course presented the financial accounting material made the financial application Read More

UBE Fits Into Any Schedule

Being able to work towards a business program certificate while also working towards my undergraduate degree is one of the great advantages of UNC Business Essentials. My schedule during the semester varies from week to week, making it difficult for me to set aside a specific time each week to work on progressing through the UBE program. Most weeks I have either a lot of homework, tests, or extracurricular activities and do not have time to work towards completing the program. The concepts taught throughout the UNC Business Essentials modules have the instant real world applicability that I rarely find in my history courses. On the other hand, I can instantly apply concepts from the financial accounting module of the Business Essentials course when following recent news developments. Many of the concepts discussed in the financial accounting module have made it easier to follow discussions on the state of the economy and the viability of certain companies. I can now more Read More

Take Business Essentials Anywhere

The flexibility of the UBE program is one of the things that I love the most about it. I don’t feel a lot of overwhelming pressure to get the classes done quickly, I really feel like the creators of this program wanted me to get the most out of the experience and take away as much information as possible. I remember back in December my family drove up to Pennsylvania from Georgia to visit some family for Christmas. This was about a 15 hour drive and I was so bored. To keep myself busy I pulled out my laptop and worked through some courses on the long drive. It was so convenient that I had this option readily available and Read More
