I have always been blessed with a naturally outgoing persona that serves me well when interacting with others, developing report, and communicating in an effective manner. However, the UNC Business Essentials Program has taught me how to take this personal strength of mine and translate it into an important business skill. One of the most important components to achieving success is maximizing one’s strengths. The Business Essentials Program enables everyone to get the most out of their individual skill-sets through a broad curriculum including various case studies and interactive activities. The business communications course in particular teaches crucial skills such as employing strategic organization and motivating one’s audience.

I learned how to utilize special structuring such as spacing within writing to maintain the sustained attention of the audience. I understand how to use foreshadowing to my advantage in order to eliminate unnecessary phrases and cluttered thoughts. The younger generations of our society employ so much informal writing through means of text messages, Facebook, and short emails that formal communication seems to be a lost art. One of the lessons within the UBE program demonstrates the importance of writing with a purpose. Writing should be informative in addition to being persuasive. The curriculum reminds that one must aspire to keep these qualities in mind when constructing a business document in order to convey a strong message to the audience.
