Bringing the real-world and business world closer to home

April 13, 2010 By NC Nwoko

With UNC Business Essentials, the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School has created an opportunity that enables me to bring the business world and the real world closer to home before I have even graduated.  Student Ambassadors and the peers to whom we reach out have the chance to learn basic business concepts to further their passions in ways that have previously been less accessible.  As an ambassador, I get the unique opportunity to use my campus networks, my creative talents and my leadership skills to engage my peers to seek opportunities above and beyond their current degrees.

As a student of the certificate program, I have learned that when taking full advantage of the program, the effects are immediate.   I have only partially completed the program and the information that I have taken in so far has already proven to be invaluable; I have learned things that will set me apart from my peers when I graduate this year, and insight that I currently use in my classes.  Li & Fung, for instance, is a global trading group that supplies high-volume, time-sensitive consumer goods.  The company was featured as an example in the Introduction to Business unit.

Li & Fung went from being just an example in a lesson, to shaping a project that I will undertake in one of my upper-level economic geography classes this semester.   Now I have access to information about this business and why it matters in today’s global society.  Without realizing it, my classmates, my professors and my friends recognize the advantage that UBE has already given me—and I can only imagine how enriched I will be when I finish.
