Learning The Ropes: UNC Kenan-Flagler Leadership Immersion

This post was written by current second-year student, Todd Cobb.  Todd is participating in the UNC Kenan-Flagler Leadership Immersion for the final seven weeks of his MBA career and wrote this upon returning from Outward Bound; a staple in the Leadership Immersion every year. Outward Bound was an amazing and challenging way to start my last Mod of business school at UNC Kenan-Flagler. After spending two years with PowerPoints, spreadsheets, networking events, and case studies, the sense of mental clarity and personal awareness I found spending a week with my peers without those daily distractions in nature was powerful. I got to test my own limits mentally, physically, and emotionally, but best of all, I developed a deep bond of Read More

To Attend, or Not to Attend – That is the Question

This post was written by first-year student, Joe Zakierski.  He attended ASW 2 and is an Investment Management concentrator.  Analytical Skills Workshop is the program that UNC Kenan-Flagler offers first year full-time MBA students to experience firsthand what some of the core classes will be like on Day 1. The original goal of the program was to assist new students in their preparation to get ready for the rigorous quantitative curriculum at UNC Kenan-Flagler, but I can tell you that the benefits are much more expansive than that. First, the classes are in a much more relaxed atmosphere and the professors will be the same professors you will have during your first semester at school. This was great for me Read More

Why UNC Kenan-Flagler Made Sense to me as a West Coast Applicant

Kendra Leigh Perlitz is a 2011 UNC Kenan-Flagler graduate and a Palo Alto, CA native. Below, she writes about why Kenan-Flagler was the right choice for her in an MBA program. I am a native Californian. After working for five years in a Finance role in the Bay Area, I began my MBA search. Alumni presence on and off campus was critical for any program I applied to because I knew that I wanted to return to San Francisco upon graduation and that I would need assistance when competing with the local, highly-qualified business school graduates. Before I accepted my UNC offer, I attended a UNC-Duke basketball viewing and networking party at Bill Starling’s (CEO of Synecor and BSBA UNC-Chapel Read More

Admissions Tip #2 – The Resume & Recommendations

Another large component of your MBA application comes in the form of your resume and your recommendations, both of which are incredibly important for us when determining your admission status. The Resume is crucial because this is the only document our interviewers will be privy to prior to your interview.  We conduct our interviews “blind,” meaning the person to interview you will not know anything more than what you present on your resume.  While we’re sure you’ve received a plethora of advice about your resume in the past, here are a few things to keep in mind with regard to your MBA application: It should be no more than one or two pages.  Regardless of how long you have been Read More

MBAs Reaching Out to the Community

On Saturday, November 17th, over 80 Kenan-Flagler Business School students participated in the school’s Fall Service Day. Participants volunteered with 12 different organizations throughout the Research Triangle, including Habitat for Humanity, the SECU Family House, the Coalition to Unchain Dogs, and the PTA Thrift Shop. Additionally, a group of students (pictured) volunteered with the North Carolina Botanical Gardens and Battle Park, performing ecological restoration. All totaled, KFBS students “donated” over 300 hours in service to others and the surrounding community. We’re looking forward to an even larger turnout for our Spring Service Day in March. In addition to Kenan-Flagler MBA students, we’ll be coordinating volunteer activities with NC State’s Jenkins MBA Program to increase our impact! We hope you can join Read More

TAR HEEL FEVER

Posted by Alex   The first thing that you will notice when you arrive in Chapel Hill is the omnipresence of the light blue color everywhere in town. This is not your basic blue, it is the UNC blue, it is more than just a baby blue color, it is the Tar Heel standard. Welcome to Tar Heel territory! North Carolina is known as the Tar Heel State but the Tar Heel moniker takes its full meaning in Chapel Hill. The inhabitants, the students and especially the UNC sports teams are the Tar Heels. As an International student, I did not grasp the full extent of what it means to be part of the Tar Heel community until I went to Read More
