Qualities of a Successful MBA Student

So you think you’re ready to return to school to get your MBA, but aren’t sure if your background or business acumen are the right fit for a particular school.  While we can’t speak for all schools, we can tell you what qualities we look for in top MBA candidates for the Full-time program at UNC Kenan-Flagler. Let’s start with the basics.  Naturally, we expect our students to have a strong intellectual capacity and quantitative ability.  These are typical qualities of a successful MBA student.  In addition, we also look for our students to maintain a high level of emotional capacity as well; students who are collaborative, passionate and empathetic.  It is the combination of these two, seemingly distinct character Read More

Admissions Tip #2 – The Resume & Recommendations

Another large component of your MBA application comes in the form of your resume and your recommendations, both of which are incredibly important for us when determining your admission status. The Resume is crucial because this is the only document our interviewers will be privy to prior to your interview.  We conduct our interviews “blind,” meaning the person to interview you will not know anything more than what you present on your resume.  While we’re sure you’ve received a plethora of advice about your resume in the past, here are a few things to keep in mind with regard to your MBA application: It should be no more than one or two pages.  Regardless of how long you have been Read More

MBAs Reaching Out to the Community

On Saturday, November 17th, over 80 Kenan-Flagler Business School students participated in the school’s Fall Service Day. Participants volunteered with 12 different organizations throughout the Research Triangle, including Habitat for Humanity, the SECU Family House, the Coalition to Unchain Dogs, and the PTA Thrift Shop. Additionally, a group of students (pictured) volunteered with the North Carolina Botanical Gardens and Battle Park, performing ecological restoration. All totaled, KFBS students “donated” over 300 hours in service to others and the surrounding community. We’re looking forward to an even larger turnout for our Spring Service Day in March. In addition to Kenan-Flagler MBA students, we’ll be coordinating volunteer activities with NC State’s Jenkins MBA Program to increase our impact! We hope you can join Read More

Admissions Tip #1 – The Essays

Our second deadline is fast approaching on December 7th and we wanted to give you a few tips to put the finishing touches on your application – starting with your essay.  We know these can put a lot of stress on you as an applicant as you figure out what to say and how to say it.  So, we wanted to try and put you at ease with a few pieces of advice; straight from our admissions team: Tell your story:  A compelling, dynamic essay is always much more memorable than staccato, anecdote-free one.  We read thousands of essays each year, and it’s much easier for us to forget one that merely adds words to the bullet points on your Read More

Managerial Accounting

The name alone inspires yawns, right? But couple it with a professor who really knows how to keep us on our toes, and it’s actually pretty exciting. I was a little scared when an uber-smart 2nd year told me it was soooo hard. But he went on to explain it’s so hard because Professor Bylinski expects everyone to come to class prepared. Well, that’s easy enough, I like reading and trying to struggle through a set of problems. Especially when I don’t have to turn them in for a grade, and can work them out with my group. But for real, it’s amazing how relentless he is. I kinda enjoy it, for some sick reason. Perhaps it’s because I’m used Read More
