There is so much to our MBA program that simply calling it “school” is a ridiculous understatement. That being said, there is no way that I could possibly describe or even briefly survey all the extra stuff that we have the opportunity to do here. So, recognizing that, let me just tell you about a few of the extra experiences that I’ve had utilizing my Fridays where we don’t have classes.

On January 22, 2010, 16 MBA students and 1 faculty became educational heroes. In the worst economy since the Great Depression, these members of the UNC Kenan-Flagler community took a two-hour drive to KIPP-Pride High School in Gaston, North Carolina to teach young African-American high school students incredible business insights. This endeavor is called Teach For A Day and it was started by former KIPP teacher and UNC Kenan-Flagler alumnus Danielle Brown ’09.

Two weeks over winter break with four niecephews under the age of eight really helped me remember the most important lesson of business school – perspective. It’s hard not to take a moment to check yourself when a six-year-old asks you if you’re a teenager because otherwise “why are you still in school?” and then follows up with “business is easy.”
