Spring Break and Mod IV

For spring break, I stayed in Chapel Hill to catch up on some much needed rest. I also decided to start studying for the CPA exam by taking a look at the flashcards that the test prep company sent. Although my spring break might be considered boring, I had fun hanging out with my family, and visiting friends that I had not seen in a long time. Spring break was also an opportunity for my friend and I to take advantage of this free time by going to gym. The bottom line is, I am really out of shape, but hopefully with more frequent trips to the gym that situation will change. For me, it is really important to get Read More

Community Service

One of the great things about the MAC program is that there are countless opportunities to become involved in the community. Currently, the MAC Community Service Committee is working on a Golf Campaign to raise money for Habitat for Humanity. This project will hopefully be the MAC program’s largest fundraiser. Many members of the Committee are working diligently to find sponsors to try and beat last year’s fundraising goal. Personally, it has been a great experience being part of this Committee because it fun to see unique ideas come to fruition knowing that all of our efforts will be working towards a good cause. Speaking of good causes, another community service opportunity available to MAC students is Voluntary Income Tax Read More

Recruiting !

We are on our fall break this week after the pretty intense recruiting and final exams in the past couple of weeks. The recruiting session started almost as soon as we came back from our summer break with each company recruiting on campus inviting us to socials. All the companies have their own unique ways of hosting us. Some of the best socials were two trivia events at ‘On Top of the Hill’, a bicycle building session at the Dean Dome and an awesome mini Olympic session in the Carolina Club. The firms bring a huge number of their staff from the main cities like Raleigh, Charlotte, Atlanta and New York. We are usually divided into groups based on our Read More

My journey so far .. May to September !

I am an international student from India and I choose Kenan Flagler because I had heard so much about it and the MAC program ! In India I was working for an investment bank and thats where I decided I wanted to master the art & science of accounting ! As I had no previous background in accounting, UNC and a couple of other schools offered me admission. I came here as this program is very well structured with some of the best faculty in the accounting industry. The program kicked off in late May with the boot camp which made us sweat in addition to the summer sun. It was really intense but well worth the effort. During the Read More

South Africa

When people hear that I’ve just returned from South Africa, they always ask “How was it?” It’s hard to think of just one word to describe the trip but one tends to come to mind – amazing. 20 hours of travel time later, we arrived in Johannesburg Thursday September 29th around dinner time and headed to our hotel – the Fire & Ice Hotel. We had free time for the evening, and woke up bright and early the next day to start our adventure. Our first visit Friday was to MultiChoice – the leading satellite television operator for the African continent. It was so interesting to hear about the companies business strategy and how it is influenced by the Read More

Fall Break Reading Proves Realistic

For those of you who have begun reading The Iron Horse Club, this real article about Koch Industries, Inc. is eerily similar to the book’s fictional company ADG.

MAC Students Learn by Simulation

We’re not training to become pilots, but that doesn’t mean we can’t learn by simulation. Today in our Leadership, Ethics, and Professionalism course, MAC students were placed into the shoes of a newly promoted staff accountant and forced to make decisions to address realistic work issues.  We worked individually for an hour before breaking off into groups of five to discuss what we would do in these delicate situations. The simulation highlighted the importance of managing relationships, since our decisions were weighed against the the wants and needs of managers, clients, and team members. Each student offered a slightly different answer of how best to deal with the issues in the simulation.  The result was five different ways of addressing Read More

The Recruiting Process Made Easy

I cannot believe it’s already September. As Nick alluded to below, these past few months in the MAC program have really flown by. It seems like only yesterday that we (class of 2012) sat in Koury Auditorium for orientation. Now we face midterms, final projects and… [gasp!]… job interviews. Luckily, the MAC program makes this process incredibly easy for students. In the program, the recruiting season officially kicks off in the summer. During these months, on a pre-designated day, accounting firms visit the campus, present information about their firms and mingle with students. From individual presentations, students can learn the history of the firm and what clients the firm typically serves. Next up are the informal “meet and greets” that Read More

Great Planet Money podcast on corporate fraud

Since I live Greensboro, I spend A LOT of time on the highway commuting to and from school everyday. Thank goodness for podcasts because they help keep my roadrage to a minimum! My friend, Emmie Aghapour, brought this Planet Money special to my attention earlier this week because of it’s incredible relevance to two of our current classes: FR B and Audit. NPR’s Planet Money interviews Sam Antar, former CFO of the Crazy Eddie electronics chain. He talks about committing massive fraud – skimming cash to reduce sales tax and then later using that cash to ensure the firm met the Street’s EPS targets. It’s pretty fascinating stuff coming from the felon himself! You can download “Inside the Mind of Read More

Transforming into global business leaders

In case you blinked recently, you may have missed the beginning of a new school year. As a corollary, the start of last school year was a whole year ago, which deserves reflection. The change we have experienced and the personal improvement we’ve achieved in the last year are astounding. Last August, few current MAC students could have predicted the full extent of how much they would learn and personally develop between then and now. At that time, some of us were just beginning the process of pursuing a higher education in Accounting. We weren’t sure what we wanted to be “when we grew up.” We had not yet submitted our applications to The University of North Carolina. Stacie Hewett Read More
