In April UNC Kenan-Flagler recognized some of the school’s most generous donors with two special events: our Donors & Scholars Celebration and Donor Appreciation Weekend. Donors & Scholars Celebration On Wednesday April 3, UNC Kenan-Flagler’s Office of Advancement hosted the third annual Donors & Scholars Celebration, an event where our fellowship and scholarship donors have the opportunity to meet their student recipients. More than 200 people attended the celebration, including donors, faculty, staff and more than 100 student scholarship and fellowship recipients. This is a 40 percent increase in participation over last year’s event. Following a reception and dinner, the evening featured a brief program with welcoming remarks from UNC Kenan-Flagler Dean James Dean and donor remarks from James Read More

Rizzo Center Expansion
For more than 50 years, UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School has been a leader in the field of executive education. Today UNC Executive Development designs programs for Fortune 500 companies and government organizations that have a significant impact on their businesses. Its track record is stellar: the Financial Times ranks its custom programs No. 13 in the world and No. 5 in the United States. Having a conference center designed with executive development as its core purpose has been a competitive advantage for UNC Kenan-Flagler. That became possible after the DuBose family donated 28 acres of historic land and the family home to the university, and UNC Kenan-Flagler broke ground for the Paul J. Rizzo Center in 1997. The result: a Read More

Prepared for Challenges
With three degrees in biology and microbiology, Dr. M. Nixon “Nick” Ellis (MBA ’92) has always been attracted to good science and the interface between science and business. When he added an MBA degree from UNC Kenan-Flagler, Ellis felt perfectly prepared as a senior pharmaceutical executive with a proven track record in preclinical viral research, drug development and management. “Proper business training beats on-the-job training, and my time here at UNC Kenan-Flagler prepared me perfectly for what came next,” says Ellis. “I was in deep water, but I could swim. My MBA education gave me the ability to understand the language and concerns of a variety of business units – ranging from manufacturing to clinical to finance. Without it, my Read More
Teamwork Is Key to Success
Many thanks to 385 business students who graduated from the BSBA, MAC and MBA programs in May and participated in their respective class campaigns by contributing a total of $30,400 in cash to UNC. Of that total, $22,000 will directly benefit UNC Kenan-Flagler. All three graduating classes surpassed their participation goals from 2010, and for the first time ever, 100 percent of the 2011 MAC class made a gift to their campaign with contributions totalling $8,690 in honor of Winnie Fowler and Kathleen Lowman, who both retired from the MAC program after a combined 44 years of service to Kenan-Flagler. Sixty percent of the 2011 MBA class participated in their campaign with a total of $13,070 in gifts, and 50 percent Read More

Making futures brighter
Thanks to the support and generosity of UNC alum John W. Burress III (AB ‘58), UNC Kenan-Flagler MBA students recently had the chance to help make a difference in the lives of young people in Cape Town, South Africa. The project, known as Global STAR – South Africa, was a full partnership between South African Education & Environment Project (SAEP) and UNC Kenan-Flagler to support and empower disadvantaged youth in Cape Town. In addition, it gave MBA students the opportunity to work on real issues facing an organization in an emerging market. “The goal of the project was to develop a strategy for SAEP to increase its efficiency and social return on investment,” says strategy team member Monique Jackson Read More
