Thanks to the generosity of Investors Title Insurance Company and its parent, Investors Title Company, UNC Kenan-Flagler will be able to award more scholarships to talented, motivated undergraduate students who want to major in business.

The Chapel Hill-based company recently established The Investors Title Insurance Company Assured Admission Undergraduate Scholarship, which will be awarded annually for the term of the gift agreement to a first-year student with an interest in real estate.

Chairman and CEO J. Allen Fine (BSBA ’61, MBA ’65) founded the company in 1972 and runs it today with his sons, President of Investors Title Company and CFO James A. “Jim” Fine Jr. (BSBA ’84) and President and COO W. Morris Fine (BSBA ’88).

In 1957, Allen Fine was a talented student – much like those who will receive the new scholarship. After completing his service with the U.S. Navy, he decided to attend UNC, where he enjoyed classes taught by well known professors including Dick Levin, the late Ike Reynolds and the late Harold Langenderfer.

“My education meant a lot to me, and having been in the Navy, I felt that I was more motivated than some students,” says Allen. His motivation and dedication paid off, and in 1961 he graduated at the top of his class. Deciding to continue his education with an MBA degree, Allen received a scholarship and completed his degree at UNC.  He began his career teaching accounting at the business school, but what he really wanted was to start his own business.

“My UNC education was a valuable experience – years later my sons thought it made a big impact on me and decided to attend UNC as well.”

“Dad would often reflect on the importance of sales – nothing happens until something is sold,” adds Morris.

“I learned in marketing classes that you can have the best product, but you have to distinguish yourself from competitors if you want to be successful,” says Allen. “You have to come up with a better way.”

In 1972, with a commitment to better service, Allen hired sales people who actively promoted the company to mortgage lenders and real estate attorneys.  As a result, he was able to successfully raise the funds necessary to capitalize the company and take it public.

Today, Investors Title Insurance Company still emphasizes caring service and innovative, adaptable solutions that set it apart from others. It is the only title insurance underwriter headquartered in North Carolina and has maintained the #1 market share position in the state since 1984.

UNC Kenan-Flagler made a strong impact on Allen’s sons as well.  “At UNC Kenan-Flagler, we were exposed to all disciplines of business, and we continue to use those concepts today – in sales, operations, finance, marketing, investment and real estate,” explains Jim. “It was a practical, useful foundation that helps us oversee and grow the company.”

The Fines continue to have positive feelings about the school and its standing and established the scholarship as a way to show their support for attracting top students.

“We want to play a part in strengthening UNC Kenan-Flagler and contribute to what it is trying to accomplish,” says Allen.
