Celebrating Donors and Scholars

April 19, 2012 By unc kenan-flagler

On Tuesday March 20, UNC Kenan-Flagler’s Office of Advancement hosted the second annual Donors and Scholars Celebration, an event where our fellowship and scholarship donors have the opportunity to meet their student recipients.

Nearly 150 people attended the celebration, including donors, faculty, staff and more than 100 student scholarship and fellowship recipients. This is a 50 percent increase in participation over last year’s event.

Following a reception and dinner, the evening featured a brief program with welcoming remarks from UNC Kenan-Flagler Dean James Dean and donor remarks from Coleman D. Ross (BSBA ’65), retired partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers and Master of Accounting fellowship donor. Ross, who has continued to mentor his past fellowship recipients over the years, delivered a heartfelt message mentioning his love for Carolina and favorite quotes about the University, including:

“The University of North Carolina is a special place. For most of us,

it was a place of self-realization and personal development

and we hold precious and dear memories of those happy years.

We learned, we grew and later we understood that we must

give back to society the best within us to improve the well-being

of those less fortunate about us…”

William C. Friday (LLB ’48, LLDH ’88), President Emeritus of The University of North Carolina

Student testimonials featured comments by the following student recipients:
  • Maital Guttman (MBA ’13), The Peter G.C. Mallinson MBA Fellowship
  • Sarah Henderson (MAC ’12), The Sanford A. Cockrell III/Deloitte Scholars Fund
  • Haroon Saqib (BSBA ’12), The Ewing Schleeter Harris BSBA Scholarship Endowment.

Each student expressed gratitude to donors for their investment in the future, which provided them with a diversity of lifetime experiences including varied study abroad and leadership opportunities.
